National 4 Metalwork

What will I learn in this subject?
The Course provides opportunities for learners to gain a range of practical metalworking skills and to use a variety of tools, equipment and materials. It allows them to plan activities through to the completion of a finished product in metal. The Course also gives learners the opportunity to develop thinking, numeracy, employability, enterprise and citizenship skills.
  
The aims of the course are to enable learners to develop:
  • skills in metalworking techniques.
  • skills in measuring and marking out metal sections and sheet materials.
  • safe working practices in workshop environments.
  • practical creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context.
   
How will I be assessed?
For each unit pupils must meet the given standards and show evidence of knowledge.
   
For the Added Value Unit, learners are expected to draw on and extend their range of practical metalworking experiences and skills in order to produce an effective overall response to the task. The practical activity will be sufficiently open and flexible to allow for personalisation and choice.
   
What are the entry requirements for this subject/level?
No entry requirements.

National 5 Metalwork

What will I learn in this subject?
The National 5 Practical Metalworking course provides opportunities for candidates to gain a range of theoretical and practical metalworking skills relating to tools, equipment, processes and materials. Pupils will also develop skills in reading and interpreting working drawings and related documents as well as an understanding of health and safety.
   
The course is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature using a project based approach to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of:
  • metalworking techniques.
  • measuring and marking out metal sections and sheet materials.
  • safe working practices in workshop environments.
  • practical creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context.

How will I be assessed?
There are two assessment elements to this course which add up to 100 marks in total:
  
Component 1: SQA Question Paper - 30% of overall grade
Component 2: SQA Final Project - 70% of overall grade
    
What are the entry requirements for this subject/level?
Achieved National 5 Woodwork and/or National 4 Metalwork.
